I am touched and honored that so many of you care about Jay and want to know how he's doing. His triumph in overcoming these challenges gives all of us hope that we too could make it to the finish line if faced with the race of our lives as Jay has been. Our dear friend Dr. Garren reminds me that "this is a marathon." This is the game and the race of Jay's life. We're all cheering for him, but it's his race to finish and his game to win.
I'm thrilled to report that he's back on track. Jay is finally winning the war over the dreaded closteridium difficile, the hospital acquired stomach bacteria. He's not 100%, but he's back. Now that he's not nauseated and can eat again, his diet has been upgraded and he's eating full meals. 2 weeks ago he was begging for Sprite, and now he's eating lasagna, cake, and key lime pie, and he's making up for lost time by drinking 2 Sprites with each meal!
It's an amazing experience to be part of this therapeutic community. The patients in rehab are recovering from strokes, trauma, traumatic brain injuries, amputations, surgeries, and debilitating illnesses. There are 3 young men who have sustained snowboarding/ski injuries. (Broken legs are one thing, spinal chord injuries are another...) Dr. Edgley has called Jay the superstar of rehab, but we are very blessed that his challenge/stroke is one that has such a good recovery potential. He's working hard on his left sided deficits, and makes the comment that "this is harder than it looks."
What a blessing that Jay is now enjoying the "simple" pleasures of life; eating, walking, reading, watching tv. It really is true that "you don't know what you've got 'till it's gone." A reminder to all of us..............
A joke for Jay. A petty thief, a teacher and lawyer die and go to heaven. When they get there, they are stopped by St. Peter who says,"Sorry heaven is crowded, so you need to answer a question correctly or else you can't get in." He looks at the teacher and asks her "what was the name of the famous ocean liner that sank after hitting an ice berg? "Oh that's easy the teacher replied "the Titanic." So St. Peter let her into heaven. Next he turned to the thief, "How many people died on that ship?" "It was 1500"the thief replie and St. Peter let him into heaven. Finally St. peter turned to the lawyer and said "Name them...." Have a good day Jay!!! Dave Svaldi

ReplyDeleteI've been following your blog and just wanted you to know that I'm rooting for you and praying for you. You're being a Super Trooper and deserve this rest and better health. It's pretty warm and sunny for Gunny today, but will be even more so for all of us as you continue to improve.

We are going right out to buy a celebratory 6-pack of Sprite to toast Jay's progress. Please let us know when he's ready for beer.
ReplyDeleteLove to you, Donna D.
Jay-
ReplyDeleteYou continue to both inspire us and remind us of our own mortality. We walk a fine tightrope in this life, and getting back on after a fall is so difficult. I'm with you. If it is any consolation, I had a dream that you and I were talking at some none-specific "reunion", and you were back to normal, speaking of your stroke in the PAST TENSE. So, if you believe dreams, you're on your way!

Alan and I think of you both every day-it was ten below zero this morning; hope it is warmer there. Jay, your recent stomach woes must have been awful, esp. being uable to continue w/rehab for some days. It's hard enough just to deal with a life-threatening and life-altering experience as you and Dawn and Devanie have, much less working so hard to get better. So please, all of you 3, remember to forgive yourselves when things are not always perfect; enough with the cheesey advice.
ReplyDeleteWe love you all.
Marsha

Hi Jay -
ReplyDeleteI don't have a CLUE what I'm doing.
I don't even know how to SPELL "blog".
For crying out loud, I only recently learned how to send a TEXT MESSAGE and I thought I was pretty techno-literate for just getting THAT done!
I tried to "comment" on your blog earlier, but then it asked me for my "profile" (I thought 'profiling' was illegal), and then it took me to another screen to create my OWN blog (like anyone really cares to read anything that I might post), and when I finally got back to the "comments" screen, my initial "comment" had vaporized into cyberspace. I hope this message makes it to you. (And I hope my computer doesn't get a virus, or a worm, or a trojan horse, or a free subscription to an online diet magazine for visiting your site.)
Anyway, I just wanted you to know that I've been thinking about you and praying for you. (I'm tight with the Man upstairs and I told him to put an extra guard on for you.)
It sounds like your recovery is coming along well. Dawn's blog reported that you said it was "more difficult than it looks" to get your left side to do what you want it to do. ...If it's any consolation, I haven't been able to get the left side to do ANYTHING that I want it to do ever since the November election.
We're having our CLUB 20 Education & Workforce Dev Cte meeting next Weds here in GJ. John Sowell has been helping me put that together. It's all good. We hope to have all the public policy challenges within the education arena fixed by the time you get back home ....wish us luck.
My prayers and Christ's love to you,
REEVES
