Milestones

It was hard to say goodbye to my sister Tammy yesterday and our daughter Devanie today. Their presence made this rehab adventure away from home so much more fun. Jay had intense outpatient therapy everyday this week, and on Saturday we went out to lunch AND dinner to celebrate our visitors and our daughter's birthday. Jay's stamina is improving as he spends time in the world. Sunday is a day of rest and the quiet today has been restorative to us both.

So many milestones this week. We returned our wheelchair and Jay is cruising around with only a cane he uses for balance and security. The staples are out of his head, and there's no more Frankenstein zipper. He's doing "assignments" for speech and occupational therapy that I'm glad I don't have to do. (powerpoint presentations, math problems, budget problems, driving tests.)

Jay is ready to be done with therapy, but he is gaining much confidence as he accesses the skills and abilities he had before his stroke.

We continue to be grateful and awed by this miracle of recovery, and we often reflect on our blessings. Thank you all for your thoughts, prayers, encouragement and love. It has meant a lot to us.

  1. Hi Dawn and Jay,
It is so wonderful and a relief to know that Jay continues with his healing strides. I wish you two had been back in Gunny to see the GHS BB girls kick butt this weekend at Regionals. All the CSU gunny kids are excited to watch the GHS girls play at State in their own "Moby Arena" on Thurs night. This year has definitely had it's up's and down's for the Gunnison Community. Let's hope this weekend was a turning point for all and the rest of the year continues on the upswing!
Keep up the hard work Jay! Gunnison is ready for the two of you to come home!
    Love and prayers,

  3. Happy you're home and the you have to go to them, instead of in the Hospital, where THEY CAME FOR YOU! It is remarkable that the brain can come back after such a trauma, and so relatively quickly. I haven't comment for a while, as I wanted to make sure you got home and were doing well, and it seems so. Way to go...you can take the kid out of Eagle Rock, but a little Eagle stays with him!

  4. Hi friends,
Electrons can be tricky ... miss a lot of nuance ... but it FEELS as if you are returning to the rhythm of your lives. That is a blessing for sure. We are meeting today with the friends who have shared our Rockies tickets over the past 15 years, March Madness Selection Sunday is a day away. Next thing you know the Mayflies will be hatching along the Gunnison River ... and, most importantly, you will be home.
    Take care,
    Cliff and Debi

  5. Dev, Dawn, & Jay ~

This is, of course, GREAT news, and Laura and I are so elated that this part of the Journey is over and the next phase will be in Gunnison with dear friends and FAMILY for all the support required. The fact that the event happened on my (re-birthday?) birthday, January the 12th, changes that day in my life forever / so glad for another great memory of my dear friend "Che'"
